Kirstenbosch
National Botanical Garden, which is part of the Cape Floristic Region Protected
Area, was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Kirstenbosch would
like you to enjoy this beautiful place, but would like you to remember the following
Do's and Don'ts in order to protect our natural heritage.
Please Do:
- Learn more about the plants
and animals.
- Explore the Garden, the
forest and the fynbos.
- Bring your camera and binoculars.
- Marvel at the richness
and diversity of the plant life.
- Watch birds, and spot wild
animals like the Grysbok, Rooikat and Cape Fox.
- Walk, hike, jog or just
sit and relax in this magnificent environment.
Please Don't:
- Walk in the flowerbeds,
trample, break or remove any plants, flowers or seeds.
- Disturb, harm, feed, touch
or remove any wildlife.
- Litter.
- Light fires, drop cigarettes
or let off fireworks.
- Play ball games or fly
kites.
- Ride a bicycle, skateboard
or rollerskate.
- Swim or climb the trees.
- Play a radio or musical
instrument.
- Bring any garden furniture.
Picnics are welcome, however,
chairs, tables, umbrellas, tents, etc are not permitted. Braais/barbecues are
not allowed. Picnic hampers are available from some of the restaurants at Kirstenbosch.
Rubbish bins are not present in most parts of the garden, as Kirstenbosch is a
NO BINS garden. Visitors are expected to take their rubbish with them when they
leave the garden and dispose of it responsibly. This helps to discourage scavengers
like rats and mongoose, as well as keeping the garden cleaner. Dogs may only be
brought in through the Rycroft Gate, where they may only be walked via the Cut
Flower section up to the 300m contour path. Dogs must be kept on the leash at
all times and dog walkers must pick up and dispose of their dog litter responsibly.
You may be fined if you are caught breaking these rules.
