The Dell
section consists of: Colonel Bird's Bath - this area is definitely the place to
be on a hot summer's day as it provides a suitable habitat for shade loving plants
like ferns, impatiens, etc; Otter Pond; Cycad Amphitheatre - this was the first
collection of plants to be established at Kirstenbosch.
Unfortunately, cycads are
rare and endangered in their natural habitats.
Fortunately, Kirstenbosch
has an active propagation programme to increase the number of plants available
to gardeners and collectors.
Pearson's Grave - the first
Director of Kirstenbosch, Professor H. Harold Pearson, is buried here in the shade
of a beautiful Atlas Cedar tree.
It was his vision and energy
that led to the creation of these magnificent gardens.
