Seal
Island, which is in False Bay, is a granite rock approximately 2 ha in area. There
is no beach or vegetation, however, it is home to the Cape Fur Seal and the African
Penguins. Some other bird species that breed regularly on the island are Whitebreasted
Cormorants and Bank Cormorants.
Fortunately, the market for fur seal
products crashed in 1983 and seal harvesting no longer occurs on Seal Island and
as a result, the seal population has increased. However, the seals attract the
Great White Sharks and an ecotourism industry to view the sharks is slowly developing.
There are many boat trips on offer
to view the island, some to just observe. However, for the adventurous, there
are also some charters that offer the opportunity to go cage diving to view the
great white shark. |
