Table Mountain,
which is a well known landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa,
has a level plateau measuring approximately three kilometres from side to side
and is surrounded by steep cliffs.
This flat
part of the mountain is often covered in cloud which appears to hang off the mountain,
this is known as the "table cloth". Maclear's Beacon, which is on the
eastern end of the plateau, is the highest point of Table Mountain which at 3563
feet high is approximately 62 feet higher than the cable station on the western
side of the plateau.
Table
Mountain has Devil's Peak to the east and Lion's
Head to the west, this together with Signal
Hill forms a natural amphitheatre of the City Bowl.
