The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a working port
During the early 70’s greater public access was demanded
as a wider use of this historic harbour and acted upon. This historic docklands
is now a tourist hub, with many attractions, such as the world-renowned Aquarium,
The Clock Tower, Time Ball Tower, Imax (movie theatre),The Dragon Tree, Robben
Island Embark station Building, Seal Landing, Breakwater Prison, South African
Maritime Museum and the Chavonnes Battery to name but a few.
The Port of Cape Town has been the scene of excavations, reclamations,
harbour constructions and based developments since its origins in 1860. Since
Queen Victoria’s second son, Prince Alfred, recognized the possibilities
for future growth, because of the trade routes to the East, there was no stopping
the transformation of the city into a hive of seafront activities.
Changes still continue today, after constant changes over the
140 year history of Cape Town harbour, that residential properties within the
harbour is not unfamiliar.
