Clanwilliam
This is one of the oldest towns in South Africa. The first visitors to Clanwilliam was in approximately 1652, almost ten years after the arrival of the settlers in Africa. However, it wasn't until 1725 that people started to stay here permanently. This town was originally called Jan Disselsvalleij, however, this was changed in 1814 by Sir John Craddock to Clanwilliam in honour of his father-in-law, the Earl of Clanwilliam.
Clanwilliam has a wealth of attractive historical buildings, seven of which have been declared Historical Buildings. To the south east of Clanwilliam you will find the Cederberg Wilderness area, this consist of approximately 7100 hectares of natural beauty. Here you will find a variety of fynbos, dramatic rock formations and the most outstanding scenery. This is the only place where leopards are protected. You will need a permit to enter this area. The friendly, helpful locals of Clanwilliam will point you in the right direction to obtain this permit.
