Greyton

The town was named Greyton after Sir George Grey by Herbert Vigne in 1854, he was a well educated man from London who was related by marriage to Lady Anne Barnard and Sir George Grey. Herbert Vigne subdivided his farm into 120 plots around a large farmhouse, which he kept for himself. It was the first town in South Africa where people of all religions, political affiliations, language, race or colour could own their own home and live together in harmony. Many descendents of the original settlers still live in Greyton to this day.

In the modern Greyton you will find many of the original thatched cottages, some dating back to 1854, have been lovingly restored to retain their rustic character. This town, with its leafy oak trees, is quiet and peacefully surrounded by the beautiful Riviersonderend Mountains.

Greyton has so much to offer the tourist, there is a wide choice of accommodation to choose from - self catering units, bed and breakfast, guesthouses and hotels, as well as a wide variety of activities on offer such as walking, swimming, fishing, horse riding, mountain bike rides, etc. The most popular choice for shopping is the Saturday Market, here you get to meet the local people and the local artists, of which there are many, as well as being able to buy the local products and art.
