Hermanus

A shepherd, Hermanus Pieters, followed an elephant trail which took him through the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) valley, in the early 1800's, which brought him out to the sea where he found a spring to the west of the Mossel River Farm. Hermanus thought this would be the perfect place to let his sheep graze during the summer, so he informed the farmers of the district. The spring became known as "Hermanuspietersfontein". However, this was shortened to "Hermanus" in 1904, when it was given municipal status.

This town was founded by farmers, but it was the fisherman who eventually settled here. Hermanus today is well known as a place to watch whales during the winter and spring months. For an indepth explanation about these whales it would be advisable to visit the Old Harbour Musuem. Hermanus is the only place in the world with a "whale crier", who sounds his kelp horn to alert visitors of where the whales have been spotted.

Hermanus may be a small town, but it has a lot to offer its visitors. The variety of accommodation facilities include camping and caravaning, bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, self catering accommodation and from budget to five star hotels.
