Montagu
Not only is this town steeped in history, but is is also well known for its healing hot mineral springs, local herbs, orchards and vineyards. Montagu was named after John Montagu, The Colonial Secretary, in 1851, but it wasn't until the 1870's, when Thomas Bain built the Cogmans Kloof pass, that the area began to develop.
The exact date of the discovery of Montagu's hot mineral springs is not known. However, it is thought to have happened when a pioneer's wagon got stuck in the rocks of a river bed and he injured his hand so bad his party decided to pitch camp in the area of today's Montagu. When they drank the water from the river they found it to be clear and refreshing, with a strange flavour. They traced the course of the river through the kloof to where they discovered the hot springs. It is said that the pioneer's hand was bathed frequently in these warm springs and it miraculously healed. When news of this healing spread, by word of mouth, the sick and ailing travelled from far distances to visit the hot springs.
