Simons Town

In 1687 Simon van der Stel, after personally surveying False Bay, came to the conclusion that it would be suitable as a safe winter anchorage. However, it wasn't until 1741 that the Dutch East India Company, after suffering many shipwrecks in Table Bay, agreed that their ships were to be anchored in Simon's Bay from May to August to avoid the rough seas in Table Bay. The development of this small settlement, then named Simon's Vlek, was slow to develop as it was extremely difficult to get to Cape Town by land. However, soon after the second British occupation in 1806 and the establishment of the Royal Naval Base this town grew rapidly. It was during the 19th century that the Simon's Town Naval Base was given the huge responsibility of looking after Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled to St Helena Island until his death in 1821.

Simon's Town most famous resident was Able Seaman Just Nuisance. This is the only dog ever to be enlisted in the Royal Navy. Just Nuisance was the sailors' favourite Great Dane, they sent the British parliament a request to allow them to enlist him in the Navy. This request was granted and the dog was taken to the Recruiting Officer who asked what his name was, "Nuisance, Sir" said the sailor, the he was asked what was the dog's first name was and he replied "Just Nuisance, Sir". This is how Just Nuisance came about. You will find the grave of Just Nuisance on the mountain overlooking Simon's Town and his statue still stands on Jubilee Square today.

Simon's Town today has many activities and historical sites available to the visitor. From swimming with the penguins on Boulders Beach to diving with sharks or hiking to visiting the Good Hope Nature Reserve. The accommodation choices range from self catering units, bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses to luxury hotels.
