Stellenbosch

In1679 the Dutch East India Company appointed Simon van der Stel as the second governor of the Cape, which at this stage only consisted of a fort and a few farms around the Table Bay area. This area was developed by the Dutch East India Company to restock their eastward bound vessels. It was Simon van der Stel who decided that wine would be a welcome addition aboard these vessels amongst the other supplies he provided. Expeditions were sent out to find the right area for this. One night, after camping along the Eerste River (this was named First River, as it was the First River he reached on his expedition) he decided he had found the right area for this. The town was established and named after him - Stellenbosch means van der Stel's forest.

Stellenbosch today is still the heart of South Africa's wine producing region, and you will find grand examples of Cape Dutch architecture in central Stellenbosch. This old town is also home to one of South Africa's finest universities and therefore remains trendy with nightclubs and cafe's.

Stellenbosch has a lot to offer the whole family - from the young to the old. It also has some outstanding accommodation on offer to suit any budget - from bed and breakfast establishments, self catering, guest houses to luxury hotels. Likewise, Stellenbosch has many eating establishments to choose from.
