Cape Town - Towns and Villages within the Western Cape
Strand
Strand is located at the foot of the Hottentots Holland mountains and on the eastern shore of False Bay. It was here almost 300 years ago that Corporal Muller and eight soldiers of the Dutch East India Company crossed the Lourens River and found the now famous Milk Bay Beach at Strand. Many Malay slaves, in the early 1800's, escaped Cape Town to set up communities in Strand based on fishing. It was originally named Somerset Strand as this area had been earmarked as a seaside resort for Somerset West. In 1896 the name was simplified to just Strand.
Strand today is an extremely popular holiday resort, with its soft white sand beach surrounded by the warm waters of False Bay. It is not only excellent for swimming and sunbathing, it also offers great beach sport activities - there is a harbour with a launching ramp for small boats.
