Cape Town - Towns and Villages within the Western Cape
Swellendam
In 1745 the Dutch East India Company founded Swellendam. This area was named after the reigning Govenor of the Cape, Hendrik Swellengrebel and Helena Ten Damme, his wife. A village was soon established opposite the Drostdy, which was across the Koornlands River. Here artisans, numerous wainwrights and traders settled. Their services were indispensable to travellers and explores, as this was the last outpost on the eastern frontier. As it was a long slow journey up the coast, this town became a useful refreshment station.
Swellendam today still offers travellers rest and relaxation. There is still a wide variety of accommodation on offer, these include bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses, chalets, camping and caravan sites with a number of self catering options on surrounding farms in the area. The usual activities are available in this area, like hiking, horse riding, mountain bike trials, etc. The attractions in this area are too vast to list, however, these are a few on offer.
Swellendam has retained all the same good qualities that it started with, like making sure travellers get to rest and relax. This town is well worth the visit.
