Cape Town - Towns and Villages within the Western Cape
Wellington
At the end of the 17th century Wellington was known as Wagenmakersvallei (the direct translation is Wagon Makers Valley). It was here that wagons were given the final check before venturing out into inhospitable land, as this area was the last white civilised outpost. In 1840 the town's name was changed to Wellington, this was in honour of the Duke of Wellington who was a well known soldier and conqueror of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
Wellington lies at the foot of the Groenberg in a beautiful scenic valley on the banks of the Kromme River with the breathtaking Hawequa Mountains. Wellington is well known for its educational institutions, this was influenced by the Scottish and the American.
Wellington has so much to offer its visitors, it has many historical buildings, architectural treasures, hiking trails, mountain biking, etc. It also has a wide range of accommodation on offer - e.g. bed and breakfast establishments, self catering units, guest houses and hotels - to suit any budget.
