Witsand
Many stone tools and pottery shards, which have been reliably dated to within the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries AD, have revealed that stone age herders like the Korana used this area. In 1872 a geologist, George Stow, visited Witsand (White Sand) and reported that a small tribe of Bushmen were the only inhabitants and that they still maintained their old habits and customs. It was only late in the nineteenth century that the white traders and farms began to settle along the Langberg.
Witsand, which is situated on St Sebastian Bay and at the mouth of the Breede River, is well known for having the largest concentration of the Southern Right Whale. Apparently the whale population in this area is increasing at an annual rate of 7%. The Breede River is known as one of the best fishing estuaries in the country, as it has a tidal action that reaches approximately 60km upstream, it is also well suited for a range of water sports.
This beautiful town has an excellent range of affordable accommodation to choose from. As with any small town in South Africa you will find the local people to be very friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable about their own town.
