Guesthouse walking holiday near Greyton
The Boesmanskloof Trail was being talked about quite a lot among our group of walking friends so we decided to give it a go.
One of the group knew of a guest house on a farm in McGregor so, as the trail is between Greyton and McGregor, we thought we would stay there for a few days, a most wonderful, peaceful place. The owners couldn't have been nicer, or more helpful. Because of the attraction of the Trail they are used to taking guests to the start, and picking them up at the end of the walk, so we took advantage of that and set out for our epic trek.
And what a walk! Winding through a valley of the Riviersonderend mountains, it covers a distance of 15km. The beauty was breathtaking, as were the treks upwards, or which there are many! About halfway, down in a lovely valley, there is a deep pool, which we were exceedingly happy to cool off in. Because permits have to be applied for, the number of hikers is limited and group numbers also limited to no more that 15. This means that, although you do meet other hikers, you don't feel you have joined a queue of people doing the same walk. There are spectacular waterfalls, better seen during the winter rains I guess. Plenty of wildlife, leopard tracks even and, naturally, plenty of wild flowers. A nature lover's delight.
We thoroughly enjoyed the hike, at a leisurely pace it takes about 5 or 6 hours, we knew we had all day but were very happy to see our lift waiting for us at the end of the trail. Another few nights spent at our marvellous guest house, where we just chilled out, and over- indulged in the plentiful food on offer.
We will be sure to return, and to let everyone we meet know just how wonderful it was.
